SAFE WATER SUPPLY
Dummy Lakes To Baffle Air Raiders “Dominion” Special Service—By Air Mall . London, February 5. A scheme costing £500,000 is being devised for the protection of London's water supply in the event of air raids. A special air raids precautions officer has worked out the plan, in close co-operation with the Air Raids Precautions Department of the Home Office. It is understood that a system of “shadow” reservoirs is contemplated—dummy lakes on a fairly small scale, set far enough away from the real water containers to baffle raiding aircraft pilots. Camouflage of an elaborate character is being planned to cover pumping stations and reservoirs... By an ingenious system of painted canvas floating on the surface of the water on buoys, the whole appearance of a reservoir may be altered from the viewpoint of an aerial observer.
Alternative, plants, operated by electric motor-driveif pumps may be erected to take the place of the older type of pumping station, witli its huge chimneys, massive pumps, and extensive outbuildings—an easy target from the air.
Mobile pumps, fitted on lorries, are another means of ensuring an altei\ native wateff supply. This is a plan which is being considered with special emphasis.
