At the recent library conference in Nelson, reference was made to the establishment in that city of a library in 1842. It was claimed that this was the first library in New Zealand, the Auckland library having been opened three days later. Such a claim, however, is easier to make than to justify, seeing that Wellington's first library was established in April, 1841, This was in the Exchange Building which was built at Te Aro in that year, and the subscription was two guineas per annum.
