ART GALLERY UPKEEP

Masterton Borough To

Contribute £BO , Dominion Special Service. Masterton, February 23. On the casting vote of the mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, the Masterton Borough Council last night decided to mdke an annual contribution of twopence a head of population, roughly £BO, toward the upkeep of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, Wellington. Mr. Jordan and Crs. A. Rippon and A. D. Low supported the proposal, but Cr. W. Kemp said he felt that very few people in the borough would benefit from the Art Gallery and Museum. Cr. G. Wilson said he doubted whether they were warranted in committing the ratepayers to an annual expenditure of £BO in perpetuity. Cr. H. E. Gardner said he did not think the council was justified in sending £BO a year to Wellington. On the motion being put to the meeting the voting was equal, the mayor exercising his casting vote in favour of the proposal.
