AMALGAMATION OF POWER BOARDS
Opposition Recommended
WANGANUI REPORT TO FARMERS’ UNION Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, February 23. - Opinions against the amalgamation of power boards in the Dominion were expressed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to-day. The question was considered at a previous meeting, when it was decided that Messrs. W. Morrison, who is a member of the Wangunui-Rangitikei Power Board, and A. P. Melville should submit reports to the executive. These reports, which were not in favour of amalgamation, were received at to-day’s meeting and adopted. / Mr. Melville pointed out that there were 40 power boards and 43 other local bodies supplying electricity in the Dominion, and it might at first appear that amalgamation w T as desirable. . “After weighing up the matter, however, I am of the opinion that a central authority controlling the distribution and sale of elec- ' tricity would not be in the interests of the public, and I recommend this executive to oppose the proposal,” said Mr. Melville.
