New London Institute Formed
“Dominion" Special Service—By Air Mail. London, February 5.
For the first time Independent research in the science of economics is to be conducted on a large scale. The National Institute of Economics and Social Research has been formed in London. Its first director is to be Professor N. F. Hall, at present head of the department of .political economy in London University. Professor Hall, a man of 35 and of the post-war Oxford generation, said this week:— “It will be an entirely independent affair unconnected with London University or any other institution. Our job will bo research, nnd nothing else. There will be no teaching and no educational side. I shall have three wholetime research workers under me. A part of their work will be statistical, conducted at headquarters, “They' will also be sent out to do ‘field work.' They can bo seconded for temporary duty in universities or sent for a month at a time to industrial areas in South Wales or Lancashire to <study conditions on the spot, “Unemployment will be one of the principal subjects of our investiga* tions. We shall examine such problems as the relation between export trade and employment, the effect of tariffs, the relation between wholesale and retail prices, ami that sort of question,"
