HARMONIC SOCIETY
Annual Report Of Year’s Work Four publie concerts were'given by the Wellington Harmonic Society, Incorporated, last year, and,the work of the choir was well up to the previous high standards, states the annual report of the society, which is to be presented to the annual meeting to-night.
“A portion of each concert was broadcast, and reports again showed that the choir goes ‘ovei; the air very well indeed.” continues the report. "The attendance at each concert was good, particularly so at the December concert,
whieli was our effort toward the Robert Barker Memorial Fund. For this the practical help given by the memorial fund committee assurred a larger audience than usual, and it is hoped that those who heard the society for the first time will continue to support it in its regular work in the future. “We are indebted to the members of the committee and also to those wiio assisted us with the programme, Madame Evelyn de Manny, Mr. Leon de Manny, and Mr. Claude Tanner (instrumental trio), Miss Ava Symons, and Mr. Gordon Short (violin and piano); Mrs. Janet Hector (solo pianist), Mrs. Wilfred Andrews (contralto), and Mrs. R. G. Caigou (accompanist).” Tlie report records with regret the death of two of its members, Mr. Robert Parker, C.M.G., a vice-president, and Mr. E. L. Howe, the society’s solicitor, and a tribute is paid to the work ami support they gave the society. The active 'membership lias been well maintained and 12 new members were admitted during the seasop. An appeal
is made for an increase in the active membership as well as for additional subscribing members. The thanks of the society are extended to Mrs. R. G. Caigou. pianist.
“Au event of more than usual interest to us during the year was the visit of the Christchurch Harmonic Society, which gave a concert in the Town Hall on July 31. A- s the length of their stay was very limited, we could not do anything in the wav of entertaining the members of our fellow society, but we were pleased to have a representative on the committee for their concert and to do wlmt we could by the sale of tickets to assist in its success,” says the report. “’The society has now completed the twenty-second year of its existence, and records of service as attained by Mr. White as conductor, Mr. Wright us president, and Mr. Bennett as secretary for such period, will be hard to better. In the approaching centenary celebrations, when the society will have attained its silver jubilee, no doubt this will be given recognition in some way.”
