WESTLAND PROSPECTS

Fast Work At Riccarton

Dominion Special Service Christchurch, February 22. Fast work of interest at Riccarton yesterday was confined mostly to horses booked to race at the Westland Racing Club's meeting this week. The No. 6 grass track was Speu and work was divided between this and the plough, both providing fast going. On the plough Swordstick held Waitaka safe over the concluding stages of a mile task, taking 1.46 2-5. The former is a dual acceptor at Hokitika ou Friday, but is to start in the principal event. Sovereign Lady finished in front of Royal Chief at the eud of seven furlongs in 1.82. Royal Chief is doing well, but it is doubtful if he will be ready for Trentham. If he does not make the trip he will probably be put aside until the early spring. Rebel Star and Lisnaeree ran five furlongs in .1.3 3-5, and Paper Note finished in front of Wine Card in 1.4. Paper Note is suffering from splint trouble and is to be spelled for treatment. Acceptable ran half a mile in 53. Glenogil was going better than Polietina over six furlongs in 1.18 3-5. On the grass Financiere easily beat Nightdress over five furlongs in 1.3 1-5, the first two in 24 4-5. The former is to represent H. Nurse's stable in the Novice Stakes on Friday and Kilrobe is to be reserved for the similar event on the«second day. Kilrobe was associated with Delium in a smart five-furlong task in 1.1, the first two furlongs in 23'1-5.

Invoice sprinted three furlongs, in 37 3-5. He has not raced well for some time past, but should make amends this week.

Necessary had a similar sprint in 37 2-5. This Reefton-owued filly has plenty of speed for short journeys. Linguist outclassed Gasmask over six furlongs in 1,14, the first three in 36, and Royal Aniphora and Drinkup ran over the same, ground in 1.16. Royal Amphora retains his ability remarkably well and should win some more money at Hokitika.

Maroha and Rotokin.o strode over six furlongs in 1.18. This pair will represent Mr; R. Adamson, who is a member of the Westland club’s committee, at Hokitika. Elmarch and Nocturnus were abreast well clear of Supreme Court at the end of half a mile in 49 2-5. Nocturnus went well and is undoubtedly in excellent order to start off on a winter preparation. Rebel Chief has been put aside for a while owing to soreness. Polydora has been brought in from her lengthy spell necessitated by her breakdown on the eve of the last Grand National meeting. She appears quite sound again and is to be got ready for early steeplechasing. Some riding engagements made for Frijlay’s programme at Hokitika are as follows: A. E. Ellis, Wine Card, Silver Ring or Wino. Royal Amphora ; G. Humphries, Owls Gleam ; A. MeSservy, Copyist, Malvasia, Gilford; H. Hibberd, Financiere, Swordstick, Invoice : C. Wilson, Elmarch, Arrowrose; A. Parsons, Maroha, Rotokino, Acceptable; Culverden. NAPIER PARK WEIGHTS
