EMPIRE GAMES CHAIRMAN
To Spend A Month In The Dominion / The chairman of the British Empire Games Federation, Sir James LeighWood, K.8.E., was among the arrivals at Wellington by the Awatea from Sydney yesterday. Accompanied by Lady Leigh-Wood, he is to spend a month in the Dominion.
Sir James expressed appreciation of the hospitality shown, by the Australians to those who went to witness the Empire Games. To him it was a wonderful thing for the Empire that representatives of 16 Dominions should meet to form enduring friendships. New Zealand had produced a great three-miler in Matthews, he said, and he could be fully expected to show up similarly at the Olympic Games. However, he had not come 12,000 miles just to see Matthews win the three-miles or anybody else win his event. To him tlie great thing was the tying more closely of the bonds of Empire, and this had undoubtedly been the greatest effect of the Gaines
