Undeniable Call
0N a sunny day would I rather go to
the pictures or help a friend chop wood? Ask me. and I'll say, "Help you, of course 1”
Films are all right at night or on a rainy day, but when there's a sun outside and a good clear sky there's an undeniable call to the open air. The very thrill of living, the pleasure of the keen axe biting deep into odorous wood, the rhythm of the swing and cut—all these things mean action. Getting tired and resting, working and pausing, laughing and talking, a marvellous day and the company of a friend. All these things are good beyond words, and even the splendour of the theatre's soft lights and sweet music grow pale before them. That's my idea of a happy afternoon —open air and wood-cutting. Original by Mary Greig (17), Wanganui.
