Make Room For Laughter
(Written by White Wings (15), Wellington.)
JpACES in a crowd are interesting to study—there are glad ones and sad ones, bright ones and bitter ones. You are gazing upon a busy, bustling crowd. You look down upon the sea of faces; most of them are hard and worried. Suddenly you spy among the faces a smiling one. Your heart gives a throb of joy. You look closely—it is a young girl's face. You feel that you would not lose sight of it for anything in the world—that person's heart is singing a song, you think, but why? Then you catch a
glimpse of the girl’s companion—strangely like her—you suppose they are sisters. . The resemblance is all the more apparent because this girl, too, is full of fun and mirth. You can tell from her happy, sincere laughter. What is their joy? What is their joke? Yes, you would love to know the secret of those happy faces; you would be thrilled to Imar the news which has made them joyful. You would like to know why their eyes were-sparkling and dancing, and why the laughter played round their lips —but the faces are gone now —you gaze anxiously seeking those smiling faces, but they have disappeared. Their joy was not for you: their secret was their own, but they had the power of making you happy Happy
in the knowledge that somewhere in that bustling crowd were two hearts filled with sunshine; two hearts g.ener ons enough to rise above the worries of this life and to find room for laughter. Laughter is all-powerful. It is the magic oil which makes the wheels of this wonderful world of ours keep on turning. Take flowers and fruit into a sick room and you will be welcome: draw back the curtains and let the golden sunshine stream in and you will be still more welcome: but take with you the fragrance of your smile, and the sunshine of your laughter, and you will be not only welcome but loved.
