A Big Property Deal A final settlement was reached last week between the Government and the Flock House trustees for the purchase of the Flock House Station. The value agreed upon was £117,950. The addition of stock and chattels taken over some 12 months ago at £36,000 raises the total sum involved in this transaction to almost £154,000 —a big farming deal for these days. The property assessors were Mr, N. 11. Mackie (Government valuer, Palmerston North) and Mr. A. Stuart, Marton (valuer for the trustees). Mr. R. M. Watson was appointed umpire, as the assessors did not agree. In the final settlement the bare land figured at £102,455, buildings at £18,803, and an unusual third item was a forestry area, valued at £18,803/9/-. An Excellent Swede.
A Shannon farmer, Mr. Alfred Seifert, gives a strong recommendation to the Whilhelmsburger swede. It has proved free of brown-heart and club-root and is a good yielder. The Herning had the first two qualifications, but failed on the third. The soil upon which this opinion is based is a fairly stiff clay loam, similar to the Massey College terrace land.
Mr. Seifert said the seed of both swedes mentioned came from Denmark. He was keen to see the Dominion selfsupporting; we would then get acclimatised seed and keep our money here. Types could bo developed to suit our own country and crops should be improved.
