Plunket Shield Cricket SWIMMING CARNIVAL The chief sports fixtures for to-day is the Plunket Shield cricket match, Auckland v. Wellington, at the Basin Reserve. Play was begun at 4 p.m, yesterday after an inspection of the wicket at 2.40 p.m. The starting time to-day is 11 a.m. and stumps will be drawn at 6 p.m., with the luncheon adjournment 1 p.m. to 1,45 p.m. Extra seating accommodation has been provided in expectation of a large crowd. New Zealand representatives are included in both teams.
Senior fixtures in both the Wellington Cricket Association and Mercantile League competitions will be held over because of the Plunket Shield match, but women’s grade matches will be continued. The fixtures, grounds and umpires are as follows:— Senior:. College O.G. v. Wellington, Prince of Wales Park N 0.2, Messrs. F. Sampson and W. R. Looner: Technical O.G. v, Kilbirnie, Prince of Wales Park No. 1, Messrs. T. Miller and F. J. Hatcher; Y.W.C.A., a bye. Intermediate: Hutt v. Technical, Emerson Street No. 2, Messrs. IV. R. Cooke and W. J. Terry; Y.W.C.A. v. Trinity, Emerson Street No. 1, Messrs. S. Moulder nnd M. Henwood. Junior: College O.G. v. Aitkens, Rolleston Street No. 1, Mr. G. S. Chisholm; Technical O.G. v. Lever Bros., Nairn Street, Mr. A. Rogers. Kilbirnie win by default from Y.W.C.A., but will play a friendly game against Hannahs at Rolleston Street No. 2. Swimming Carnival. The first and only swimming carnival to be held at Te Aro Baths this season will be conducted by the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club this afternoon, starting at 2.30. Features on the programme will be the primary and secondary school relay races for the Maxwell trophies, and Coltman and Duthie Cups, the 220yds. breaststroke centre championship, the popular Walker and Hall interclub relay championship, inter-house relay, and a water polo match between two of the leading A grade teams. Among the competitors will be swimmers from Masterton. Speedboat Regatta. The annual speed-boat regatta at Pieton to-day will probably attract a large crowd of spectators from Wellington. The Wahine leaves the steamer express wharf at 8 a.m., and should arrive at Picton about 11 a.m, The main race of the day,
the Matsport Cup, is timed for 1.15 p.m. Five speed-boats are'U’xpeeted to start, the Pelorus Jack, Pieton (the boat which won the cup last year), the Tory Queen, Pieton, the Miss Ethel, Wanganui, the Spot, Auckland, and the Baby Taubman, Wellington. Dewar Shield Athletics. The Wellington Amateur Athletic centre will stage the second Dewar Shield inter-club contest of the season- at the Petone Oval this afternoon at 2.30 o’clock. A full programme of sprint, distance and field events will be contested, and as the first contest left the clubs close in points scored competition is sure to be keen. Baseball. There will be no matches under the control of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association to-day. Senior inter-club fixtures in the Hutt Valley Association’s competition are:- — Senior A: Lower Hutt v. Petone, at Lower Hutt; Taita v, Waiwetu, at Taita; Hutt Bowling v. Muritai, at Muritai, Senior B: Petone v. Muritai, at Petone; Upper Hutt v, Central, at Central; Eastern v. Lower Hutt, at Eastern. A rally of junior tennis players and coaches, arranged by the junior advisory committee of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, will he held at Miramar courts to-morrow morning at 10 o’clock. The programme will consist of play on eight courts' until 11 a.m., and a display of tennis moving pictures from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. The pictures will be shown in the pavilion even if it is too wet to play. Golf. The Hutt Golf Club will hold a stableford bogey competition this afternoon, and a bogey match will be played to-morrow morning.
