Severe Hostilities Likely At Hwai River I Received February 9, 12.50 a.m.) Shanghai, February 8. The. Eighth Chinese Red Route Army is surrounded at Yuanping, 80 miles north of Taiyuan, after fierce fighting with 20,000 Japanese. Severe hostilities appear imminent at Hwai River, where the Japanese are reinforced. A Canton message says that, Japanese aeroplanes machine-gunned a fleet of junks carrying American petrol, and killed one Chinese. The American Consul is investigating. MOVE FOR PEACE China Asking Britain To Mediate? (Received February 9, 12.30 a.m.) Tokio, February 8. Correspondents in Hong-Kong declare that China is approaching Britain to mediate for peace. It is stated by the paper “Nichlnichl Shimbun” that the Chinese Premier, Dr. Kung, is using Madame Chiang Kai-shek in the preliminary overtures. The paper expects the new British Ambassador to bring a formula to save China's face, while recognising Japan’s position in the Far East. (This story is not received from any British source.)
