NOTED CRICKETER RETIRES

A. Galland, Of Otago The outstanding personality in Dunedin senior cricket for many years, A. Galland, lias found it necessary to retire from the game. He strained a leg muscle iu a recent match between Grange and Albion, and the effects have been so severe that be ' will be-prevented from playing again. It. is an unfortunate ending to a notable career, and the Grange side will sadly miss flic inspiration of his leadership. Galland began his association with the Grange club when lie was not more than 14" years of age, and has been playing for over 30 years. lie had the benefit of the coaching of J. N. Crawford, and made such rapid progress that lie was selected to play for his province, in the 1914-15 Season. He represented Otago almost continuously until the 1930-31 season. Otago has produced few better allrounders than Galland. An accomplished forcing batsman and a brilliant fieldsman in any position, he was also a useful bowler and a first-class wicket-keeper. On several occasions he kept wickets for his province, and at times was relieved of this position during the course of a match so that be could take a turn with the ball.

His best performance with the bat for the province was in the match against Auckland, at Auckland, in 1925. He made 44 in the first innings, and 115 in the second. This, as a matter of fact, was his only century in Plunket Shield cricket. But he made numerous centuries for his club, including one in the first match of the current season. He holds the record score for the North Ground with 218 against Albion. He came close to selection for New Zealand when he was chosen as twelfth man in the match between New Zealand and A. C. McLaren’s English team in 1923. He captained Otago on several occasions.
