Casual Watersiders’
Association
FORMED AT WELLINGTON
For the purpose of protecting the interests of casual workers ou the waterfront and to ensure that when casual work is available these men shall have first preference, an association under the title of the Wellington Casual Watersiders’ Association, lias been formed.
Over 300 members have been enrolled, and it is expected that this number will be increased to 500. The. members of the new association, it is claimed, are accustomed to wharf work, and know how to do it, whereas, as things have been in the past, all kinds of men in other employment come down to the waterfront on their off days in the hope of getting a little extra work. “These are the folk we are up against,” said one of the newlyelected officials. “We are not. in any way antagonistic to the present union; in fact, we hope to work in perfect harmony witli them.”
The following officers were elected at a meeting of the association held yesterday :—President, Mr. K. Bell; secretary, Mr. H. Mason; executive, Messrs. E. Dudley, J. Roache, N. Jones, H. Lambert, A. Reid, N. Attfield, W. Griffiths, H. Sherwood, H. Mason, H. Edwards, K. Bell, and F. Meachem, with power to add. The executive was emjiowered to meet representatives of the harbour board and shipping companies in order to discuss an agreement.
