BOWLS TESTER

Wellington Centre Appointment

The Wellington Bowling Centre last night appointed Mr. S. R. Murray its official bowl tester and accepted the offer of the Wellington Bowling Club to make that club's greens the headquarters for testing. Six applications for the position were received. Mr. Murray has been tester to the Victorian Bowling Association, Australia, tester in New Zealand to the Northern Bowling Association, through Alcock and Company when the table test was in use, and tester to the Wellington centre previously. It was decided that in the Easter rinks tournament three games of 18 heads should be played each day. A lunch hour is to be observed from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. with the object of saving time by allowing the first of the afternoon games to be commenced before lunch, as is the custom in some other centres. The tournament committee is to inspect greens and select the best fbr the champion of champions matches.

It was decided to invite the Manawatu centre to visit Wellington next Wednesday. Mr. J. H. O’Donnell offered the use of the’ Wellington club's greens for the matches. Reporting on the half-yearly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr. W. Gilbert pointed out that as a result of a decision made at the meeting it was likely that the wearing of the customary bowling costume would be made compulsory in tournaments. In place of the rule that players must play in recognised bowling costume there was to be a rule that players should not be permitted to play except in recognised bowling costume, which was w’hite or cream trousers of full length, white or cream shirt and club colours. It ■was remarked that this would prohibit the wearing of grey trousers.

The chair was occupied by Mr. Gilbert, the president, Mr. M. J. Casey, being absent at the Rotorua tournament.
