PROPOSED MEMORIALS

Otago Centennial Projects

By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, February 8.

A decision to support the proposal of the Women’s Centennial Committee for the erection of a 1 women’s building in Dunedin, as well as to assist the Otago Hospital Board’s scheme for a new cancer block, was made by tlie Otago Provincial Centennial Council at a meeting held this afternoon. A communication was received from the Women’s ,Centennial Committee putting forward arguments in favour of the erection of the building, which would serve to perpetuate the memory of the pioneer women of Otago. This building, need for which was keenly felt by women visitors ,to the city, would provide a much-needed centre fot social and other activities. It was estimated that the suggested building, plans for which had been drawn up, would cost approximately £10,006, and another £2OOO would provide incidental furnishings. Putting forward a proposal for the erection of a cancer block at the Dunedin Hospital as a centennial memorial the chairman of the Otago Hospital Board, Mr. J. W. Dove, said there was unhappily little diminution in the number of cases of cancer brought into hospitals and since the treatment of that disease was of paramount importance, it seemed that the erection of a cancer block as proposed by the hospital board would constitute a worthy memorial. An extension would have to be carried out anyway, whether as a centennial memorial or not. The tot;il cost of the building and plant would be about £17,000, but the board asked for assistance only with the building, which was estimated to cost about £l2OO.
