REMEDIES FOR STOCK
Dissatisfaction With Regulations VIEW OF FARMERS’ UNION Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 2. Dissatisfaction with the attitude adopted by the Stock Remedies’ Registration Board to the passing of stock medicines was expressed by members of the Manawatu Provincial Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, which met, at Palmerston North to-day. The complaints arose from a letter received from the board stating that every effort was being made' to trace'the sale of unregistered remedies,"and asking for the executive’s help in the enforcing of the Stock Remedies Act. The executive was also asked to supply, where possible, instances of unregistered remedies. “In regard to the opinion of your executive that some remedies which have been registered are not effective, the board desires to inform your executive that all applications for registration of stock remedies are given very careful attention and treated on their merits, decision being arrived at only after consideration of the formulae in association with the claims made,” the letter stated. There were now 650 remedies registered, one member of the executive stated, and when the board was constituted it did not withhold registration from any of the remedies then in use. The trouble was that the Government did not try out the medicines. One member of the executive gave an example of a man who had sent to the board a medicine which he proposed to manufacture, and received an authorisation the following day.
The secretary, Mr. L. I. Plimmer, said that the new attitude of the board was to pass any medicine provided it was not definitely harmful and provided that in some cases a cure had been effected. “Tn other words, they have slackened up in their requirements,” said the chairman, Mr. H. T. McGleavy. “We can concoct something with sugar and water, claim a cure, and have it registered.” The meeting decided to make an effort to have the regulations regarding the registration of remedies tightened up. It was felt that such remedies should be tried out before a registration were issued.
