LOVELY COLOURS

The-Mid-Summer Flower Show Masses of gloriously tinted hydrangeas. stately gladioli and beautiful dahlias, ranging from enormous ones down to the quaint little pom-poms, wove a pattern of lovely colours in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, when the Wellington Horticultural Society’s mid-summer show was held. Here and there, arranged in attractive manner, were exhibits of pansies, shrubs and plants of various descriptions, particularly noticeable being some delicatelytinted spindleberry. There was a large attendance of members for the opening ceremony, which was performed by the society’s secretary, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who was wearing a frock of black and white patterned georgette, and a black line straw hat with black cire bow and diamente ornament. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet of gladioli and roses in toues of pink and maidenhair fern by’ Sylvia Chapman. Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who has recently returned from an extensive trip abroad, spoke on gardening and of Howers, her remarks being reported elsewhere in this issue. Later in the afternoon Mrs. Knox Gilmer entertained a number of people at afternoon tea, the official table having as a centrepiece a vase of blue and vivid mauve hydrangeas around which were gladioli in tones of orange, mauve and yellow. At each side were Hat bowls of begonias in varying shades and maidenhair fern. Those invited to the official table were: Lady Myers, Lady Beauchamp, the mayor, Mr. T. C. A Hislop, and Mrs. Hislop, Captain and Mrs. Holm, Mr. R. A., Wright, M.l’., and Mrs. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. J A. Campbell, Mrs. J. B. MacEwau, Mr. and .Mrs. J. L. Arcus, Airs. Miller, Miss McDougall, Miss Archibald, Air. F. S. Pope, Airs. J. G. McKenzie, Air. AV. 11. P Barber, Air. and Airs. H. A. Fox.
