BOMBINGS IN SPAIN
Captain Of British Ship Killed RAID AND COUNTER-RAID (Received January 27, 7.20 p.m.) Barcelona, January 26. The Government claims that its forces have advanced north-west of Teruel, and also asserts that the loyalist troops captured three hills southwest of Madrid. Government planes raided Valladolid, dropping seven tons of bombs on the station and railway workshops. Explosions indicated that a munition dump was blown up. A Saragossa message says that Government planes dropped 60 bombs on Valladolid, many falling on an orphanage which was wrecked. Twelve were killed and 40 injured. An official loyalist statement declares that six insurgent aeroplanes raided Valencia, bombing first the port and then the city, and killing 125 persons and injuring 208. The dead include Captain Arnold Crone, skipper of the British ship Dover Abbey, which was loading oranges. MR. LLOYD GEORGE’S MESSAGE Cap D’Antibes, January 26. In acknowledging golden wedding congratulations from M. Negrin, the Spanish Prime Minister, Mr. Lloyd George replied: “We both wish victory will crown your glorious efforts to establish democracy, liberty and social justice in Spain.”
