YEARLINGS FOR AUSTRALIA
Four In Mrs. McDonald’s Stable Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 25. Four juvenile aristocrats are now the centre of attraction at Mrs. A. W. McDonald’s stable at Awapuni. They are the yearlings purchased last week by the Sydney trainer, George Price, for his Australian patrons —the ’ Limond —'Miss 'Thespian colt, the Foxbridge—Eager Rose colt, the Night Raid—Corouilla filly, and the Gascony—Sahara filly. ■Naturally the 700gns. purchase, the Limond colt secured for Sir James Murdoch, holds pride of place, for he is also one of the last of the Limonds. There have been better looking youngsters by the defunct Koatanui Stud sire sold at lower figures, but this youngster, who is a half-brother to Chief Ranger, has a fine neck and head, and good, strong Ifigs. Perhaps he is a little lengthy in the barrel, but there is plenty of room, for development, and his equable disposition is a favourable characteristic. The Foxbridge—'Eager Rose colt, who was bought for Mr. W. Longworth, Sydney, for 55ogns., brings a new sire into the limelight, and is a son of a wellperformed mare. He is remarkably deep in the middle-piece, and his coltish neck and head are well set on good shoulders. He is very solid all round, and Ijas a lot of room for development. • Then there is the Night Raid — Coronilla filly, bought for the former fsew Zealander, Mr. E. J. Watt, at 32ugns. A member of the famous Desert Gold family, this yearling is bigger tjian most of her relations and, despite her long barrel, she is well timbered anefy has plenty of room for development. On appearances alone the bouquet goes to the cheapest lot of the quartette, the Gascony—Sahara filly purchased at 23'0gns.' for Dr. Nigel Smith. This neat little chestnut is a ready-made racehorse, and shaped up like a two-year-o.d. Compact in the barrel, yet. thick through, she is well built up behind. There is speed and power in her shoulders and a handsome picture is completed with bti aristocratic head and neck. &hc is sun to come to hand quickly, and. tftis halfsister to Sudan appeals as being one or the bargains of the 1938 yearling sales. Last year Mrs. McDonald broke in lhe Squire for George Price, and gave him his early preparation at Awapuni befoie he was ■shipped to Sydney just before t spring meetings opgned. Growing yearlings do particularly well in this district —a fact well known to Price who was for many years at the formerly famous Highden Stud at Awahun—and the progress of these ynungsters, even though they are to do their racing in Australia, will be watched with keen interest here.
