DISASTROUS FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA
Small Coastal Towns Are Isolated FAMILIES RESCUED FROM HOUSETOPS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 20, 8.40 p.m.) Sydney, January 20. Floods on the north coast are causing thousands of pounds’ worth of 'damage.' There have been heavy losses of cattle, and railway washaways have dislocated traffic. 1 A number of small coastal towns are isolated. Many families have been rescued from the housetops. The main damage has occurred at Kyogle, Beilingen, Coramba, and settlements along the Clarence River in the vicinity of Grafton. One man was drowned. An earlier message stated: A cyclone on the north coast was followed by torrential rains which threaten to cause extensive flooding in Southern Queensland and the northern rivers district of New South Wales. The Tweed River broke its banks last night and spread over miles of canefields and invaded the main street of Murwillumbah. There is a foot of water in many business premises.
A washaway occurred on the railway near Kyogle, and express trains between Sydney an'd Brisbane are delayed.
