MILE RECORD EQUALLED

Oratory’s Brilliance TRENTHAM SECOND DAY RESULTS Racing Club Handicap To Kelly (By The Watcheb.)

The feature of the racing ou the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham yesterday was the brilliant .mile of Oratory in the January Handicap. In running 1.36 she equalled the recently established New Zealand record of Courtcraft in the King's Plate on the second day of the Auckland meeting. On that occasion Courtcraft carried his weigh t-for-age, and Oratory finished third, but yesterday Oratory carried 51b. over her weight-for-age. ~ It was a hard day for punters, who began the day badly and finished it even worse, the final race, the Douro Cup, being won by one of the rank outsiders in Mishna. The Racing Club Handicap was another form upset when Kelly won. The sprint went to Lady Ina. who beat the favourite Ben Braggie. The two-year-old handicap was an interesting event, producing a decided improvement in the form of the Defoe colt Defaulter. There was a large attendance, and the weather was fine and warm ;,in fact, very hot early in the day. Totalisator investments were £44.1)05 (win £20,986/10/-, place £23,918/10/-), compared with £■76,291 last year. The corresponding day last year was Anniversary Day and the third day a Saturday, so the figures yesterday cannot really be compared with either of those two days. Considering that it was really very much of au offday for a summer meeting, the total compares very favourably with the Cup Day turnover of £46,363. Surprise in Highweight. , Punters started the day badly in the highweight, no unusual occurrence at Trentbam, the moderately fancied Journet just winning from an outsider in Nightlass, with another outsider in Lustral paying the other dividend. Journet came from several places baek in the early stages after a slow beginning, but Nightlass was always fairly well Placed and Lustral was in the middle of t.ie field, the pace being made by Charade, Bonny Glow and Convivial. All the three leaders were stopping at the false rail, where' Nightlass drew ahead. A strong challenge by Journet saw him get up on the post to win by half a head. A length away there Was a great finish for third money between Lustral, Huckie, The burgeon, ‘southern Blood, Convivial and Charade. ~ . , ... Journet won very solidly, being suited by the longer distance. Nightlass put "P a greatly improved display. She nulled up lame and was possibly unfortunate to lose the race through this disability. Huskies performance was a good one, as halfway through the race he had drifted right'back to the rear. He finished very strongly and with a better run might have justified his win favouritism. the other favourite, Lord Quick, also disappeared in the running round about the five furlongs and was never prominent aiterward. A Solid Win. Le Toquet, at a good price, was.responsible for a solid effort in winning the Trial Plate, as he was a good way back in the field in the early stages Of the Haile Selassie, Earlsconrt and Flame Queen set a very fast pace and carried most of the runners off their feet, particularly the favourite Play Ou, who had the misfortune to get chopped back at the start. He showed a lot of pace to draw up, fairly prominently in the middle stages, but of course he could not go on with it. The pace set 1-y the leaders had them in trouble entering the straight, where Thala and Le Toquet drew up. Then Mulatto came with a strong run wide out on the track and momentarily looked like finishing the best of this trio, but he did not carry On so strongly to the end, and Le Toquet. finishing the better, won fairly comfortably. Thala just kept his head in front of Mulatto for second money. They were clear of Flame Queen, who was attended by Twilight Song, Amatory and Earlsconrt. The winner hns shown great improvement lately and he won really Well. The greatest improvement was shown by Mulatto, who was also well backed. He had run a fair race in the hack sprint the first day, but no doubt the change of riders influenced bettors, who received an excellent run for their money. Brilliant Oratory. Oratory was responsible for a brilliant performance in the January Handicap, winning all the (way in time which equalled the recently-established record of Courtcraft at Ellerslie.

Oratory was attended in the running by Roaming and then a bunch which included Valainito, Alby, Debltam, and Old Surrey. Alma made a brilliant move out of the back stretch to become very prominent on the turn, but she did not go on with it, and evenutally finished a bad last. OratMy led into the straight from Roaming and Valainito with most of the others finding the pace too much. Oratory was holding Roaming nicely at the last furlong, but as danger was threatening from others at this stage Morris shook her up and, repsonding well, she ran on to score very decisively at the finish from Roaming, Wildflower putting in an electric run to cut out Valamito for third on the post. The next to finish were Alunga, Boomerang, and Debham. The fast pace set by Oratory had everything in trouble. Roaming ran an excellent race, but Oratory was of superior CliisS. Wildflower finished exceptionally well. Valamito ran another sound race, but the others were never able to go the pace. Came From the Clouds. An outsider in Alloa won the hack sprint, but he was responsible for an amazingly good performance, for he was last all the way in the early running and still last when they came on to the course proper. Here the early leaders began to fade, with the exception of Accomplice and Lord Nuffield, who began a great struggle in which they were joined by Lazybones and Race Call. Accomplice and. Lord Nuffield came on well, but Lazybones stumbled about 100 yards off the post and lost any chance he had. Finally Alloa came with an amazing run on the rails and went on to score convincingly from Lord Nuffield, who just headed Aceomplace and Lazybones. The next to finish were Pekoe, Sunbeam. Great Quex and Double Gift. Alloa vias assisted by a 71b. allowance which reduced his weight to the minimum. Lord Nuffield also improved and so did Accomplice, who nearly brought off a big surprise. Race Call and Aureus faded out, but Lazybones, Pekoe and Sunbeam all ran good races. Kelly All the Way. There was a complete upset of cup form in the Racing Club Handicap. Kelly went to the front from the start and set a sound but not an excessive pace and was allowed his own rules. Ifg bowled along freely to the straight and then, when challenged, had too much left in him to be overhauled. Lowenberg, who ran a much better race than on the first day, had moved up slightly on the home turn and he put in a determined challenge, but he was just good enough for second money. Roiuid Up, who had pulled hard in behind Kelly most of the way weakened slightly over the last bit and just beat Padishah and Cernc Abbas, who finished together. Padishah ran his usual race from the back and although he was

finishing stronger than anything the distance did not suit him for his finishing run s-o well as the extra furlong in the eup. The crowd gave the little boy Gilchrist on Kelly a great reception, which he thoroughly deserved. Lowenberg, however, should have won. He waited too long to run up to the leader. Winner Kuns On. The stakes winner Surmount failed badly in the Nursery Handicap, beating only one horse home. The race was won decisively-by the Riccartdn representative Defaulter, who had to carry 6ilb. overweight in order to secure the services of L. J. Ellis. sE The running was made by Surmount, from Ivar, Amigo and Defaulter. Surmount and Ivar had had enough entering the straight, where Amigo ran through and Iqoked like winning, but Defaulter, coming on the rails, scored what really amounted to a runaway win. Amigo was just as comfortably second from Ivar, with Dunmanway finishing fast from the rear of the field into fourth place; then came Eastern Heir, Surmount and Piastre. Defaulter, who won at the New Zealand Cup meeting, is an improved colt. Amigo and Ivar had every chance and so did Surmount, but the winner run away from them all over the last furlong. Lady Ina’s Sprint.

Lady Ina made amends for her bad luek the first day by a decisive win in the open sprint. The pace was made by Grey Loiiuur and Ben Braggie, with Top Row im.idy, Lady Ina just in behind, and Triune tailing off. In the straight Ben Braggie came on well under his weight, but Lady Ina ran on much the better at the finish and scored decisively. Triune came very fast on the rails in the run home, uud just failed by inches to get second from Beu Braggie. Had he received a little more room he would have beaten the favourite. Top Row was fourth, and theu Laughing Lass, Icing and Grey Honour. The winner won really well. The disappointment of the race was Grey Honour, who faded badly in the straight. Douro Cup to Outsider. The Douro Cup has often resulted in a surprise, and this year’s contest was the’b.ggest reverse backers have had in that event fpr some years, an outsider tn Mishna coming home at a long price. The race was spoiled to a great extent by the favourite, Cricket, together with Salient Knight, Studley Royal, aud Balmenter, all getting squeezed back at the start, their chances being immediately extinguished. Silver River rushed to the front and endeavoured to win all the way. He set *ch a fast pace that he had most of the field in trouble. Relative, Mishna, Nightdress, Wagner and Lickem were nearest to the pacemaker iu the running. Silver River led into the straight from Relative, Mishna, Lickem, aud Good Sun. Silver River ran on well, but over the final stages Mishna came up on his inner with a determined run and won going away. Good Sun was a fair third, with Relative fourth, and then Nightdress, Lickem, Balmehter, and Tail Light. Mishna won well, but if he hau been a little more patiently handled, it is probable that Silver River would have scored Balmenter put in a phenomenal run from the rear, and looked likely at the false rail, but naturally he could not go on with it. Lickem appeared to have every chance.
