Labourer Sentenced To Two Months’ Jail
Pleading guilty to two charges of theft, Charles AViiliam Fittes, labourer, aged 26, was convicted on each and sentenced to two months’ jail by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, AVellington, yesterday.
Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle prosecuted, and the charges were that between October 8 and December 4, 193", at Wellington, Fit-ties stole a quantity of clothing, a woman’s handbag, ornaments and tools, of a total value of £45, the property of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd.: and that on or about February 1, 1936, at Wellington, he stole a quantity of elements, an electric iron, immersion 'heaters, soldering irons, and electrical equipment of a total value of £22, the property of the National Electric Company, Ltd.
Detective-Sergeant Doyle said that on January 12 premises occupied by Fittes at 32a Wiggins Street, were searched by the Mt. Cook police. They found there the property of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., and after making further inquiries they found the other articles. The goods had been stolen from MeKenzie’s, while Fittes was employed as a packer in the bulk store, and from the National Electric Company, LM., when he was employed as a driver. Fittes had one previous conviction, for the theft of a bicycle at Auckland. .Mr. .1. Meltzer appeared for Fit.es who, he said, had succumbed to temptation. "lie Ims had his warning, and was brought face to face with the position before." said the magistrate, who rejected counsel’s plea for probation lor defendant. ___
