CHRISTCHURCH FIRE
Timber Company’s Premises Damaged By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, January 19. A fire which broke out early this morning caused damage estimated at over fjOOO 'at the Western Timber Company’s premises in Sydenham. All the plant and half of the stock were destroyed by the fire, which had secured a very strong hold by the time the brigade was called out. The heat was so fierce that the galvanised iron walls of the building were bent and crumpled, while the force of the water tore the iron away from its supports. Although hoses kept up a continual stream of water, it was not until an hour later that the fire was conquered.
