“Dominion” Special Service—By Air Mall. .. London, January. 2. America’s most famous stage actress, Miss Katherine Cornell, has just paid a 96-hour visit to London. Ever since she played the part of “Iris Storm” in Michael Arlen’s “The Green Hat,” she has shown a preference for green hats. The one in which she arrived in London was half black and half green. London’s only woman builder, Mrs. Bessie Burbidge, ha'd her handbag stolen this week. In It were plans for 58 roofs, 15 drains and numerous other estimates, her diary, gol'd watch and lucky black mascot. Mrs Burbidge is head of a jobbing building business in Clapham, and is very annoyed at the hold-up in her .work. When one of her men falls ill, she sets to and does the work herself. She is especially keen on tackling roofs and drains and in her spare time is an enthusiastic swimmer, skater, cook and athlete. When Victorian members of Parliament meet the New South Wales members in a series of tennis, golf and billiard matches in Sydney from February 14-21. Mrs. Clarence Weber will be playing in all. “I’m going to have a shot at the lot,” she said. “There is cricket, too, but I don’t think I’ll be in the Victorian eleven. I played cricket until a few years ago,” she added, “so don’t be surprised—l may comeback yet.” Mrs. Weber is a great advocate of suitable sports for women for relaxation an'd exercise. She is a familiar figure on the members’ tennis court at Parliament House, where she enjoys a set or two before beginning her work for the day.
