PRESENTATION TO BOXER
Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North. January 19. Many people interested in boxing and other sports in the Manawatu district met on Monday night to bid farewell to J. Collins, the Manawatu lightweight boxer, who has been, chosen to represent New Zealand in the boxing tournament to be held at the Empire Games in Sydney. This is only the second occasion on which Palmerston North has sent a boxer overseas, the first being in 1909. when Air. G. Watehorn went to Australia and won an Australasian title. Wishing Collins good luck, Air. J. Hodgens, M.P., said that for the first time Manawatu was to have an entrant in the Empire Games. He complimented his trainer. Mr. L. Downes, on having produced such an outstanding boxer. Hundreds in Palmerston North would follow Collins’s progress with great interest. Mr. G. AVatchorn, vice-president of the Manawatu Boxing Association, expressed the hope that Collins would return victorious to Palmerston North, and presented him with a well-filled wallet. Collins is only 19 years of age, und has been boxing for the past three years. He has had victories over almost al) the leading lightweights In New Zealand.
