WAITAKI RAILWAY BRIDGE

Test Piles Shatter

The pile-driving tests for the new Waltaki railway bridge have been temporarily discontinued on the instructions of Mr. I*. H. Morey, Dunedin, the engineer in charge of the work, who stated that two test piles had been driven a fair way into the bed of the river before shattering near the base. In his opinion the cause of the trouble was the fact that the piles, which were made of a special quick-drying cement, were not sufficiently seasoned. They had been curing for three months, but apparentlv this was not sufficient, and at the end of this month he intended to drive four more test piles. By that time the river, which was now in full flood, would have abated somewhat, and in the meantime special borings were being made to ascertain the substance of the riverbed.

Though Mr. Morey stated that the bed of the Waitaki was hard, lie did not consider it extraordinarily so, and said the conditions were really very similar to those met with in the Rangitata River.
