REBELS GIVE UP.
Teruel Completely In Government Hands TRAGIC SCENES Republican Soldiers Moved To Pity By Telegraph.—Press. Assn.—Copyright (Received January 9, 6.30 p.m.) Barcelona, January S. Colonel Reydancourt, commander of the remnant of rebels who were holding out at Teruel, surrendered with 1500 combatants, non-com-batants sheltering in the Ascuncion Hospital. A truce had earlier been arranged to allow 500 injured children, women and old men to be removed from hospital. They were watched respectfully by Republican soldiers, who were moved by the pity of the tragic scenes. All the patients were in terrible physical condition, and half-starved. They were crying for food and water, and many fainted as soon as they stepped out of bed. Soldiers comforted them and showed them, every consideration. It is officially (announced that in addition to the main Teruel surrenders, 140 others, including the Bishop of Teruel, surrendered from the Santa Clara Convent. Teruel is now definitely cleaned up. The Government is giving maximum respect to prisoners. It is reported from Salamanca that a communique again claims large unspecified successes. An earlier message from Teruel stated that one hundred children, who were taking refuge in the cellars, were killed when Government troops exploded a mine under the Santa Clara Convent. FRANCO’S WARNING Purchases From Valencia Government Salamanca, January 8. General Franco has issued a warning to the world that his Government will not recognise in future any purchases of gold, bank securities, ar treasures, and jewellery from the Valencia Government, and will use every means in his power for the annulment of sales and the recovery of whatever is sold.
