“A LITTLE TACTLESS”

Hawke’s Bay Conference’s Invitation To Minister

Dominion Special Service. Napier, December 18.

“It seems a little tactless after the Minister has agreed to come in January to suggest that he should be invited to come a month later.” This comment was made by the Hon. IV E. Barnard, M.P., to-day concerning the decision of the conference of local bodies’ representatives held at Hastings on Wednesday to consider the repayment of earthquake loans to invite the Minister of Finance to visit Hawke’s Bay in February. “In conjunction with Messrs. H. M. Christie and E. L. Cullen I arranged for the Minister of Finance to visit Napier during January to meet local bodies who are interested in the question of earthquake rehabilitation loans,” said Mr. Barnard. “At a meeting of some of the local bodies held recently at Hastings, when this information had already been made available, it was decided to invite the Minister to visit Hawke’s Bay during the latter part of February. I shall, of course, put the proposal to the Minister, but I doubt very much whether he will be able to accept it.

“Mr. Nash is probably the busiest of all the Ministers and Parliament will resume on March 1. Further than that, it is certain that a caucus will be held before then.”
