CRICKET PRACTICE

Round Of Friendly Games SOME GOOD BOWLING Batsmen Take The Brake Off There was a carefree spirit about the senior games played ■under control of the Wellington Cricket Association on Saturday, as it had been decreed that there should be an off day which would not count for the championships. The weather was beautifully fine, but the rain on Thursday and Friday had rendered the wickets dead easy. , Midland put up a creditable peiformance by dismissing Institute for 100, and then running up 263 for seven wickets. Institute promoted five second grade players for this game, and one of them, J. Boddy, shaped very confidently in compiling 31 not out. A. Lang, M. Bilby, and J. McKeown also batted well for Institute, but the majority of the batsmen found the bowling of It. O’Neill and J. Bentley too good for them. E. W. Tindill and W. Hepburn gave Midland a fine start by putting on 106 for the first wicket, and this pair and J. Fay, E. Bezzant, and D. Mcßae all scored freely. Every man on the Institue side had a turn with the ball, even wicketkeeper, M. Bilby, who secured a wicket. Thanks to a spirited knock for 06 by H. V. Hu Chateau, Wellington College Old Boys ran up 209 against Hutt on the Hutt Recreation Ground, and good bowling by B. Griffiths saw Hutt dismissed for 134, giving Old Boys a win by 75 runs on the first innings. B. J. Champness put up a good all-round performance for Hutt, scoring 47 not out, and taking three wickets for 31 runs. .... Even scoring, toward which six “Stamen played well their part, enabled Wellington to total 204 against Kilbirnie on the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground. Kilbirnie/which was without the services of C. K. Parsloe, D. S. Wilson, H. Rice, and W. Bain, could only respond with 122, of which Wrigley was responsible for 41. The feature of the game between University and Karori on Karori Park was a vigorous 66 bv A. F. Harding for the students, who totalled 165. Karori found the bowling of D. S. Dean, who took six wickets for 22 runs, not at all to their liking, and batsmen were dismissed for a total of 95. R. Cameron also bowled well for University, his bag being four for 56. Senior Colts in Form. A team of senior colts proved much too strong for the junior representative eleven in the game at the Basiu Reserve. The Brabin Shield team had first use of the wicket”, but could only total 76 against good bowling by 11. Rice and M. Browne, who both got a considerable amount of turn, upon the ball. The only batsmen to shape confidently were the captain, R. Dalton, who was at the wicktes for an hour for 25, and C. Williams, who scored 16 not out. The senior colts, on going to the wickets, scored freely. H. F. Rice and J. R. Capstick opened, but, after reaching a dozen the latter was bowled by a good one from C. Williams. J. Scott then joined Rice in a merry partnership, which caused the tens to mount at a rapid pace. The 100 came up in 40 minutes, Rice 'having scored 60 of the total. With the total at 136, R. Buddle, the captain, called Rice in to give some of the other ba lament some practice. Rice played a brilliant innings for his 90, which included two sixes and eight fours. Scott continued to swing the long handle until bowled by J. Moody. He hit merrily for his 45, which included six boundary strokes. With the total at 171 for the loss of four wickets, I the innings was declared closed at 5.10 p.m.

The junior representatives played much ; more confidently in their second knock. R. Dalton, P. Rough, Dentice. A. Thompson, and A. Allan all attacked the bowling resolutely, and runs came at a steady pace. At 6.30, 115 had been scored for the loss of five wickets. The game thus ended in a win for the senior colts by 95 runs on the first innings. This game" should serve as a good preparation for the junior representative team for the Brabiu Shield match with Auckland, which is to be played here on December 27 and 28.
