CHAPEL DEDICATED

Catholic Seamen’s

Institute

ANONYMOUS GIFT OF £2OO

The new chapel of the Catholic Seamen’s Institute in ViVian Street was dedicated yesterday by his Grace Archbishop O’Shea. An attendance of about 170 included the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, and the president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Mr. P. D. Hoskins, Mr. C. Mallia, president of the Seamen’s Institute committee, was in charge of the proceedings. Mr. Mallia announced the receipt of an anonymous donation of £2OO for the general purposes of the institute. His Grace, in referring to the beauty of the chapel, said that it compared more than favourably with practically any other chapel of its size he had seen, and paid a graceful tribute to the enthusiasm and work of the committee. Mr. Fraser expressed his appreciation of the work being done in the interests of seafarers, whose surroundings and social conditions, he said, left so much to be desired, even in these days of luxury liners. He hoped that the work would continue and meet with every success. Mr. Hoskins, after complimenting the committee on the quality of the service offered seamen, stated that he desired publicly to thank the Government for its generous support of the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Visitors to the chapel were impressed by the unusual beauty of the altar, which was made by Mr. C. Mallia. It. is of highly-polished kauri, with a front panel presenting an almost perfect specimen of figuring, and the tabernacle door is of walnut.
