Large numbers of travellers will visit Australia for the Christmas holidays this year, according to shipping bookings. Two liners leaving Auckland next week for Sydney already have only a few berths available, and it is expected that the ships will be full when they sail. The Awatea, which will leave Auckland on Tuesday for Sydney, where she will arrive on the morning of December 24, has no spare berths in the tourist class, and only a few still remain in the first class. The Matson liner Mariposa, arriving from San Francisco and Island ports on the morning of December 24, will bring a heavy list of passengers and travellers embarking at Auckland will fill practically all the remaining berths. The Mariposa leaves for Sydney and Melbourne on the afternoon of her arrival. Most of the bookings for both liners are for short return visits. A feature of the passenger bookings by the Mariposa is the large number of schoolteachers travelling to Australia.
