Star Almost Hugged To Death

Nearly fainting in his vice-like arms, Irene Dunne suffered painful rib injuries in a film scene with Ralph Bellamy in which he, playing a country bumpkin, made his embrace a little too amorous.

The star masked her agony until the scene was ended, then had to be helped to her dressing-room. Dr. Floyd R. Parks, Columbia physician, was summoned to “The Awful Truth” set, and after a careful examination said she sustained contusions but that no bones were broken.

Bellamy, apologetic, said it was the first time in his career that he had been guilty of such realism. The actor was genuinely sorry, but felt reassured when Miss Dunne, upon returning to the set, smilingly remarked: “Now I know how it feels to be ‘hugged to death’.!”
