Women Barristers
But Will There Be Women Judges As Well? (By Fenella.) “Dominion" Special Service.—By Air Mail. London, November 19. TpIVE women have been called to the bar this week, bringing the total number of women barristers in this country up to nearly 100. The average proportion of women to men during the last seven years has been only one to 20, and this year’s proportion of one to 14 is unusually high.
But so far we have no women stipendiary magistrates, County Court judges, recorders or High Court judges. Two women have, I believe, applied for recorderships, but without success. It is possible that the passing of Mr. A. P. Herbert’s Matrimonial Causes Bill and the setting up of new domestic courts to settle marriage difficulties will provide much more work for women barristers, and also more openings for them to win higher appointments in theii - profession.
