WELLESLEY COLLEGE
Distribution Of Prizes INCREASES IN ROLL The Masonic Hall, Wellington, wa.s crowded last night on the occasion of the annual prize-giving ceremony of Wellesley College. Mr. R. L. Macalister, president of the parents’ association, who occupied the chair, said that the twenty-fourth year of the existence of the college was coming to an end and never before had it reached such a high state of efficiency. Paying a tribute to tlie work of the principal, Mr. W. H. Stevens, Mr. Macalister said he was a man who never spared himself in the interests of the boys. The college, however, would not be in its present tine state were it not for the loyalty and efficiency of its staff. The departure of Canon Percival James bad meant a loss to the school, but his place had been worthily taken by Hie Rev. G. McKenzie, who bad given loyal service. Mr. McKenzie would be leaving St.. Paul’s shortly, but he would not be far away and. no doubt, would not relinquish his interest in the college. Increases in the roll of the college during the year, continued Air. Macalister, had brought the. total to more than 160. making Wellesley College the largest priv i preparatory school in the Dominion. Wheu another 20 op 30 enrolments I’.-.cl been secured, the college would be full to capacity and it looked as though it would not be long before Mr. Stevens had a waiting list. Principal's Address. "This year has been a particularly difficult one for all schools,” said Mr. Stevens, "and iu addition we have had our own particular difficulties: but I was very fortunate in being able to obtain tlie assistance of two very experienced teachers —Air. L. F. Pegler to take over Form 11 aud Air. W. T. Chaplin to relieve Mr. J. R. Lamason. I am pleased to have Mr. Lamason with us again. While abroad he hud a unique opportunity of seeing a great deal, anti in addition lie was able to visit a number of educational institutions of all kinds. The school cannot fail to benefit from his experiences. Generally, I have had the whole-hearted cooperation of the staff, and the fact that everj- member has done excellent work in his or her own particular sphere is borne out by the fact that the inspectors’ report this year was particularly good. Looking back over those of previous years, I was unable to find a better one. -"I wish to thank the Rev. G. McKenzie for his continued interest in the school, and I trust that we shall not entirely lose it when he goes to his new parish. “Now that our educational authorities have committed themselves so wholeheartedly to the New Education, any details of examination results would, 1 realise, be in extremely bad taste; but perhaps 1 may be pardoned if I say that our results this year have been quite as good as iu previous years.” The prizes were distributed by Mrs. H.
