Tourist Traffic In New Zealand DIFFICULTY IN ARRANGING TOURS Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, December 15. The opinion that tourist traffic in New Zealand had now reached a point when it was governed by the accommodation available at the various resorts was expressed by an officer of the Tourist Department, who said that business prior to Christmas had never been greater than at present. Great difficulty was being experienced in arranging tours by overseas visitors in view of the heavy bookings by New Zealanders. More people than ever were going to the South Island this year, and as many were motorists who proposed taking their cars, difficulty was being experienced in getting accommodation on the express steamers across Cook Strait. Indeed, the Union Company had advised the department that the space for cars on its ferry steamers was fully allotted for December 15, 16, 17, .18, 20, 21, 22, 23 (daylight trip), 23 (evening trip), 24 (daylight trip), 24 (evening trip), 25, 27, 29 and January 3, 7 and 10. For December 28 the accommodation was filling fast.
Forward booking by intending overseas visitors for the January-April period was unusually heavy.
