NEW THEATRE
Work Expected To Start Soon WORK is expected to start shortly ’’on Otaki’s new theatre, which will represent a definite step forward in the provision of amusement for residents and visitors. The theatre, which will be owned by the Otaki Borough Council, is to be one that will do justice to any town’s civic pride and will serve the needs of the district for many years to come. Of a utility type, the building will cater not only for pictures but also for all classes of social gatherings. It will be built on the ramp style, but there will be ample level floor space left for dancing. MAORI CHURCH Steeped In Native Tradition OTAKI is justly proud of its famous and historical Maori church, “Rangiatea.” Built in 1846, it is one of the finest iu existence. After his conquest of the district, Te Rauparaha urged his people to erect the church, and up to the time of bis death worshipped in it regularly. His inspiration was said to have arisen from his seeing many great churches while in Sydney.
