SUCCESSFUL YEAR

St. Patrick’s College, Silverstrcam

ADVICE OF ARCHBISHOP

An appeal to scholars of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, never to act on expediency either in public or private life was made by his Grace, Archbishop O’Shea, in his address at the prize-giiing ceremony yesterday. He asked them to heed his advice and so make themselves a leaven in the society they would enter for the spreading of those principles which would make their country—often called, though perhaps there was not perfect right of claim, God s Own Country —and any other country, happier and more just in its dealings with its citizens. They had more than the advantages of a well-appointed college where their education really only began and they were taught how to learn in the university ot life, he said. One pf the chief objects of education was the development ot character and the moral faculties; not merely the training of the intellect. A learned man was not necessarily a good man and if he were not good then the greater his knowledge and intelligence the greater harm he could do. In a religious college they had the advantage ot a complete education and any. college which made religion its first PO'ut a real asset to the country. Most ot the world’s present troubles were caused by leaders following expediency and personal gain instead of the high principles that should actuate them. The sole reason why some nations were pre-eminent in many things to-day was that they were at one time Christian lands, ft they lost that characteristic they would soon disappear from the front rank. The rector, Rev. Father J. Dowling, SM„ M.A., said that Archbishop O’Shea was the most distinguished representative of the boarding section of St. Patrick s Wellington, which St. Patrick’s, Silverstream, continued, so they felt they had a special claim to him. The number of boarders for the year reached 236. Fear of overcrowding meant refusing a number who applied for admission. To provide additional accommodation new rooms were erected and it was hoped there would be sufficient accommodation for some years. The first fifteen won all its school games; the first eleven had similar sucses-3 aud had now reached a standard equal to that of the best secondary school teams of New Zealand. The college athletic team was one point behind the winners in the Wellington secondary schools’ championships. Late last year the college team was advised that it had gained first place in the Earl Roberts Imperial Cadet trophy for long-range rifle shooting, and this year it won the Jellicoc Shield for short-range shooting. A pupil. R. Fox, also gained an important swimming championship. Throughout this year the college was privileged to have the services of skilled instructors from the military depot at Trentham, who attended on four days each week. As a result of their efforts the physique and the physical fitness of the boys greatly improved, and for these benefits both the college and the parents should be grateful. The following prizes were presented by Archbishop O'Shea. In the forms the second and third names are those of the pupils adjudged next in merit to the winners, whose names are given first: —
