Three of the crew were killed when a German freight, planp hit a hangar when taking off from Croydon in a thick fog. The plane burst into flames and the hangar was set on fire, the lire brigade being summoned.
Mechanics working on two passenger planes housed in the hangar raced for their lives as flaming petrol flung out of the burst tanks set everything ablaze. It is believed they all escaped.
Officials stated that the visibility was less than 10 yards. Suddenly there was a terrific crash and the whole aerodrome was lit up by the flames, despite the fog. MIRACLE DESCENT Plane With Jammed Landing Gear London< November 26. Stranded in mid-air with jammed landing gear, an Air Force plane laden with bombs and with a crew of three circled for four hours in order to exhaust its petrol and reduce the risk of fire. It then made a miracle landing at Dorchester in which only the propeller an'd the tail-wheel were damaged. When the pilot discovered his predicament he made smoke signals to the airport and another plane was sent up with the order chalked in big letters on the fuselage: “Drop your bombs, finish your petrol, and land at 90.” The bombs were 'discharged at a nearby bombing-range and the other instructions were carried out to the letter.
