SURPRISE WIN

Dark Shadow Scores In Alison Cup TAKAPUNA FIRST DAY Tc Hero Just Beaten In Two-year-old Race Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 27. Exceptionally keen racing was enjoyed at Ellerslie to-day, when the Takapuna Jockey Club held the first day of its spring meeting. The track was good and improved as the day progressed. The totalisator investments handled totalled £43,937, compared with £31,351 on the opening day last year, an increase of £12,606. When Ringshot and Captain Bruce fell in the Ponui Handicap the latter’s rider, S. Tremain, received a broken collarbone. An inquiry was opened into the cause of the mishap and adjourned until to-mor-row. Fino Performance, Improved by her racing at Te Rapa, the Irish-bred Lady Meath registered a fine performance to win the Melrose Maiden Handicap, for which she was an each way favourite. In spite of the fact that she drew No. 20 at the barrier, Lady Meath was soon in fppnt with Pasture, who began from No. 14, and they were together uutil reaching the straight, where Lady Meath always had a slight advantage and ran on well. Pasture battled on gamely, but Ivy Willonyx camo fast on the outside from a long way back just to beat her for second. Quilp was ajways prominent and held on to be a creditable fourth, and Tainui also made a respectable showing. The second fancy. Poker Dice, was cut back early after beginning smartly, and was never dangerous. Beverley was another well-supported runner, but failed to begin well from No. 19 and was always near the rear. Brilliant Speed. Showing brilliant speed to reach the front early from No. 12 in the field of 13, Miss Te Koura brought off a surprise in winning the Spring Handicap. She was weakening at the finish after being clear at the turn, and did not have much to spare from Bronzette, who just outstayed Royal Vaals for second. Bronzette might have won with a little further to go. . , Miss Tc Koura has improved and made up for her misfortune at the Roto-, rua Hunt meeting, where she did not get away well. Gold Vaals, who won at his first start at Paeroa last month, ran a close fourth, and may show improvement soon. Bronzette and Royal Vaals made good showings and arc on the up-grade. The each way favourite, Jack Tar, lost his position early and never looked like winning, though he performed creditably for fifth. Torch was sixth and closer at the finish than at any other stage. Tudor’s Good Jumping. The top-weight, Tudor, was responsible for a fine performance in winning the Tiri Hurdles, in which he gave a brilliant display of jumping. Tudor wafi in the lead over the last half-mile and he finished better than Sandrift, who joined him at the home turn and rose with him at the last fence. Tudor’s brilliant juinping stood him in rood stead and he gained an advantage That enabled him to pull through. The success was popular, because he is a good horse who has had to carry big weights without having the best of luck. Sandrift registered her best performance to date, but ran about a little when her rider drew the whip after jumping the Inst fence. Trackman, of whpm a lot of use was made eady, weakened at: the end for third, and Thespis made a fair showing for fourth. Blue Tiger tailed right off in the first couple of furlongs and, though going fast, was still a long way back when he fell at. the second to last fence. Lap Up was beaten when he broke down and was pulled up. Dark Shadow Surprises.

Beaching the front quickly, the littlefancied Dark Shadow just won the Alison Cup after making all the running. Dark Shadow was just clear at the straight entrance' from King Hey, who had run up smartly, Kelly, Kilonsu, Ronn Bay and Royal Appellant, aud in a great finish he won by a nose from knight of Australia, who made a determined dash on the rails in the last furlongs and just failed to get up. Royal Appellant ran a line race to be another nose away third and Mazir was almost in line fourth. Then followed Kiltowyn, who did not have the best of luck in the early running, Kelly and Valamito. Te Hero Beaten, The hot favourite Te Hero was narrowly beaten by the second fancy, V itement, in the Cambria Handicap, but he was a little unlucky not to win, bis rider being a little too confident until right near the end. Vitement and Fidelis made the running, and the former was just clear at the distance, where he ran in to the fence after being out from the rails a little. Te Hero then had to change his course and he made a great bid, only to fail by a head. Fidelis was two lengths away third, and True Bill was fourth. The form of the others was not good. Perillus, Hot Box and Phildale all lost ground at the start. Takapuna Plate. The each-way favourite, Anion, attempted to win the Takapuna Plate from end to end, but weakened near the■ end and could only finish third. zYnion led into the straight from Marie s Acre, Inver, Dragon Moth, High Sea and Du Maurier. The field bunched below the distance, and Inver finished best, to win nicely from Marie’s zVcre, who just cut Anion out. of second. Du Maurier was fourth, followed by Winlona, High Sea and Dragon Moth. Inver produced his best form and won well, staying on much better than his Btableraate, Anion. Exciting Finish. The Cheltenham Handicap provided a most exciting finish, nose margins separating the first four horses. Galilee and Peter Beckford reached the lead quickly, and they made play into the straight from Palustre and Bachelor King, who were together ahead of Tray Bit and Triune. These horses were bunched inside the distance, where Tray Bit had to come away from the rails to get a run. Once he got clear Tray Bit went very fast and just won in the last stride from Peter Beckford, who hung on gamely to beat Palustre for second. Star Artist finished pleasingly to be almost in line fourth, followed by Triune and Impasto. The first four horses registered sound performances. Galilee and Bachelor King both tired in the last furlong, but they might be all the better for the race. Last to Privy Seal. The three-year-old Privy Seal broke a

run of outs for R. S. Bagby when she scored in the Ponui Handicap. Alyth attempted to lead all the way and made the running into the straight from Bon Star, Mai de Mer, Melvanui, Land Girl and Privy Seal. Near the distance Privy Seal came through on the rails to win going away by three lengths from Alyth. Mai de Mer was a fair third, aiid Land Girl was fourth ahead of Melvanui, Brown Lap and Raepata. Privy Seal has improved and won well. The favourites, Brown Lap and Raepata, were at the tail of the field early and were never dangerous. Details Of The Racing MELROSE MAIDEN HANDICAP, of £l5O.
