TIGER GAIN WINS

First Day’s Results At Feilding FLYING TO MATA HARI Airing Takes Last Event

(By

The Watcher.)

Brilliant summer weather favoured the opening of the Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday, and it attracted a large attendance, with a resulti.njj satisfactory increase in totalisator turnover.

Two of last year’s winners, Tiger Gain aud Hunting Queen, repeated their successes in the Manchester Handicap and Kowhai Hack Handicap respectively, and the Flying Handicap was won by Mata Hari. The Kiwitea Handicap went to Airing. In addition to winning with Tiger Gain, the stable also took the hurdles with Journet. Both horses are owned by Mr. W. Henderson and trained by W. C. Griffith. Racing was keen and interesting and held on a track in excellent order, the going being fast. Favourites did not do very well, winning only one race. In spite of this and one or two small fields the totalisator turnover was £20,259 10/-, an increase of £3187 on the corresponding day last year. The programme wag carried out to schedule and the only delay was after the last race, when the pay-out was held un owing to an inquiry affecting the first two horses, but the placings were allowed to stand. The inrjiiry was into bumping between Airing, who finished first, and Que Whetu, the second horse. An Easy Win,

Form in the hurdle face was fairly obvious, and the public picked it correctly in making- Journet a better favourite than Round Score. Journet bided his time, but when he made his run over the last half he outclassed the opposition. Round Score ran well up to his Levin form and would have been harder to beat but for being interfered with badly at the third fence, where Lacquer nearly fell in front of him. While it was a big upsetting factor for him, it is doubtful 11 he would have been good enough for the winner. At the same time Round Score s party have every reason to feel satisfied with his two Infest efforts. He and Journet jumped excellently. lop Flat save a very good showing, but jumped high. Even Money ran only moderately. Riotous is shaping up nicely. A Speedy Filly.

The maiden race proved a good thing for the Fordell filly Red Cat. She led all the way. Noisy Night went with her to the straight, but then dropped back, Red Cat running on to win practically untroubled from the favourite, Amatory, with Alloa a fair third, then Aria, Baron Bold, Noisy Night, Whistle, Pinkie aud Havana Princess. The winner, who was having only her second race, is a bit small but very speedy. She was inclined to hang badly, but this should disappear with more experience. Amatory finished fairly well from several places back, but he is a galloper who seems to want plenty of room. Alloa got off with the field, though not smartly. He looked dangerous turning for home, but weakened a little at the end. Of the others the likeliest appears to be the pure novice Noisy Night.

A Solid Effort. Tiger Gain’s win in the Manchester Handicap was full of merit. He was sent after the pacemaker, Corroboree, seven furlongs from home, hia rider realising Corroboree's ability to run out in front.

From that stage on Tiger Gain was always going well, but he had several challenges to overcome in the straight. Hazoor looked the likeliest at the last furlong, but he weakened again, and it was left to Brazen King to ask the severest question. Brazen King, who had come right round the field, was possibly a trillc unlucky, but there was no denying the merit of Tiger Gain’s sustained finish. The Buzzer, who had drifted to the rear down the back stretch and was last into the straight, put in a remarkable run home to get a creditable third, with Hazoor right up fourth, then Tahuraugi and Quadroon. Nothing finished stronger at the end than The Buzzer. Taitoru finished last, but he may have been galloped on when Quadroon got on to his heels in the first furlong. Won All the Way. Mata Hari had too much pace for her opponents in the Flying Handicap. Relative went with her early, but Mata Hari was clear on the turn and, though she was stopping at the finish, she never looked in danger of losing. Relative hung badly on the turn into the straight or she might have beaten Wildflower for second, but Wildflower finished very well from the rear of the field. Lady Ina and Deficit were in line for fourth. The former was interfered with when Clessamor slipped and fell back. Juvenile Duel. Minga and Raratonga monopolised the betting in the juvenile race and they fought out the race and the finish. Minga held the actual advantage till just short .of the post, but Raratonga was always going a little the better and pushed his head in front. The others were outclassed, but Dunmanway, who just missed third by a stride, is on the improve. Minga has had a cold since Wellington so there is an excuse for her defeat, but Raratonga had more in reserve than the margin would indicate. Favourite Unlucky. Middle, favourite for the hack distance event, was very unlucky to lose narrowly to Hunting Queen. Middle was well placed early but gave away several places in the middle stages. On the turn, however, though still a fair way back, he was going very well, but he was sandwiched between a struggling pair as they straightened up and before he could extricate himself Hunting Queen had the race won. Middle finished full of running and rapidly overhauled the winner, but just missed. Hunting Queen, taken up to the front fairly early and outside her opponents, put up one of her best efforts. It was a closely contested finish,, Bonny Glow, Galteemore, Ngatirahiri and Ned Cuttie all being well up. Galteemore finished well. Ngatirahiri appeared very sore prior to the race. A Good Filly. Florence Mills, whose only previous start in a race had produced a win in the maiden race at Wanganui in September, enhanced her record with a very stylish win in the hack sprint. She was always in front and, though Silver River and Race Cali attempted to go with her, with Great Hope also challenging in the straight, Florence Mills ran on well for a decisive win. There was little between Silver River, Great Hope and Race Call at the post, and they were followed by Vadanoo, Ilias and Ohanga. The winner looks a good galloper sure to earn further distinction. Silver River was rather a surprise. Great Hope bad every chance. Ilias should improve. Captain Treville began too slowly to have any chance. Another All the Way.

Airing, saved for the last race in preference to the Flying, justified the decision by leading all the way. He had a strenuous challenge from One Whetu to contend with at the finish, otherwise he had the field beaten throughout. One ■Whetu ranged alongside Airing in the straight, but the two-stone difference told its tale over the last bit. Airing, however, had to survive an inquiry into bumping that occurred because of his hanging out. Gay Boy and Lady Kyra ran well and were in line for third, but the distance did not suit Padishah. The

two favourites, Lone Raider and Dancing Lady, did not do much to confirm this surprising choice of backers.
