LAYKOLD CUP

Five-mile Cycle Race To W. Keighley

PETONE MEETING

Big Fields In Athletic

Events

The Petonc Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s popular Laykold Cup meeting again attracted a big crowd to the Petone Oval on Saturday. Perfect weather and efficient organisation made the event as big a success as usual. The Laykold Cup, the five-mile classic of the track season in Wellington, was won by W. Keighley, of the Port Nicholson club, from 2SO yards. T. Roe, the holder, was second from scratch. The nineteen starters had to battle against a stiff northerly for part of each lap, and possibly for that reason the back markers failed to ride the right race to win. J. Wilson was on the scratch mark with Roe, and they lost no time in overtaking C. Biggs, P. Roc, O. Disley, and Les Sowerby, all on the 90 yards mark. With seven laps to go to Keighley was 45 yards out from the back markers, with whom Miller, of Pahiatua, a limit man, was keeping pace. From then on Keigbtley increased his lead, and although Wilson, P. Roe and R. Loader (185 yards) in turn made the padb for the rest, Keighley was 150 yards in front with half a mile to go, and at the bell the gap was half a lap. Wilson then challenged Dutton, but T. Roc and Les Sowerby bad a little more in reserve and took the places in a fast finish. Keighley’s win, the result of keen training and game riding, was a popular one. Other cycling and fiat events attracted big fields, and were keenly contested. Jliss J. McGrath, Petone, carried off the Neil Cup by winning both the 75 yards and 100 yards women’s handicaps, and the holder, Miss J. Crampton, was second. A competitor who impressed with her stylish running was Jlrs. V. Rollerson, from the Kia Toa club, Palmerston North. From scratch she was second in the dash, and won her heat in the 100 yr In the two-mile cycle event the back markers did not repeat their mistake, and in a splendid finish R. Loader (to yards) got home from Les Sowerby (6u yards) and J. Wilson (scr.). The sprints provided the keen tussles expected, C. Hausman (Jlasterton), J. Eastwood (University), and J. lord (Wellington) proving hard men to beat. Hausman won the 100 yards in 10 l-u from two yards. Eastwood and Ford won their heats in the furlong off scratch, but in the final could not catch K.. r. MeGrath. Petone, who ran a splendid race from eight yards. •

Government’s Interest. The two cups were presented to the winners by the Hon. W. Nash, who referred to the Government's interest in the development of athletic sports in the Dominion. "Jlr. Parry bus not produced any idle Bill,” he declared. Though there would probably be some difficulty in perfecting the organisation, the aim was to get the sporting and athletic side fully developed. Jlr Nash welcomed the American coach, Alfred Fitch, and paid a tribute to the enterprise of the \\ elliugton centre in engaging him. Fitch was a man ol remarkable experience, he said, lie hoped he would enjoy his. stay here, ano that athletics would benefit by his knowDetailed results of the events are as follows: —
