OBITUARY

Miss Lilian Baylis London, November 25. The death has occurred of Miss Lilian Baylis, lessee an'd manager of the Old Vic Theatre and Sadler’s Wells.

Miss Lilian Mary Baylis, lessee and manager of the Old Vic Theatre, did much to establish that house as a home for Shakespeare and opera. In her earlv youth she was a concert entertainer in England and South Africa. She was a daughter of the late Edward William Baylis, and of the late Liebe Konss Baylis, both musicians. As a child she appeared on the concert platform playing the violin. Her connection with the Old Vic dates back to 1898. and she became manager of Sadler’s Wells on its reopening in 1931. She was made a Companion of Honour in 1929, and was an honorary M.A. of Oxford and an honorary LL.D, of Birmingham University.
