THE NORTH-WEST FRONTIER
“The Challenge of the North-West ' Frontier ” by C. F. Andrews (London: Allen and Unwin).
In this examination of the political and military situation on ;he NorthWest Frontier of India, Mr. C. F. Andrews is extremely critical of the Government policy toward the tribal aspirations of the native inhabitants of the area. There can be little doubt that the views he expresses are largely those of the -body of Indian leaders who are in opposition to the Government administration. Indeed he admits as much in his preface, in which he refers to talks with those leaders time and again in the past few years. As a resume, therefore, of the view of those opposing the India Act’s provisions, the book will interest students of the Indian problem. The book is a strong indictment of the present aerial bombing policy against recalcitrant tribes, and criticises the Indian Government for maintaining what the author characterises as a gravely misunderstanding attitude toward the Islamic associations of the native peple, and suggests that a change of this attitude might have lasting effect fr good. Several chapters are devoted to an examination of the influence of the North-West Frontier policy on AngloSoviet relations, its links with the whole Asian problem, and the changes arising in the tribal mentality from the conquest of Abyssinia by Italy.
