AUSTRALIAN FISHING PLANS
Opinion Of Chairman Of New Zealand Company Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 11. ■ “Although the Alfie Cam gets quite big catches, I do not think that we will lose much of our Australian trade,” said Mr. A. F. Jagger, chairman of directors of Sanford, Limited, at the annual meeting, when a shareholder, Mr. F. W. Blakey, raised the question of the operation of Australian trawlers in the vicinity of New Zealand. “I gather that Cam and Company have designs on our fish,” Mr. Blakey said. “How are we going to get on with our export business?” “We have had it before and I do not think we can do anything if they fish outside territorial waters,” Mr. Jagger replied. “I suppose we will live through it, and I hope so. We have no jurisdiction and the Government has no jurisdiction. It may affect our sales, but Sanford, Limited, l s doing business in practically every town in New South Wales. We have built up a wonderful organisation and they are endeavouring to break us down.” The chairman concluded by reiterating that in his opinion the company would not lose much of its Australian trade. A director, Mr. F. M. Hills, said later that previous efforts to compete by sending trawlers from Australia had failed, and, while the position was being watched, he did not consider it should cause undue concern.
