Price Of Auckland Fruit In South Island CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISCUSSION

The ability of Auckland citrus fruitgrowers to produce lemons comparable with the imported article and the need for an improved .method of distribution to the South Island .were commented upon by members of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. It was said that during the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce at Timaru last week Auckland lemons were being sold at Timaru at five for 1/-, whereas at Auckland they could be bought at 16 for 1/-, and some critical comment had ensued. Mr. W. R. Fee, chairman, said that at the conference southern delegates expressed their dissatisfaction with the local prices of Dominion lemons and compared their quality with that of imported lemons. The matter should be taken up in the Auckland district as apparently a large proportion of the lemons ivas being sent direct from orchards to shops without undergoing any process of curing. Mr. A. G. Lunn said the industry was approaching a stage when it could give a full and good supply of lemons for the Dominion market, and it was the bounden duty of the council to support the growers, many of whom had been struggling for years. The Government should take steps to see that a fair quantity was sent to the South Island at reasonable prices.
