Proposed State Purchases

The tribunal appointed by the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple, for the purpose of deciding' upon a fair and equitable price for the New Zealand Railways Department to pay for certain road services continued its sitting at Wellington on Wednesday and yesterday and will resume on Monday, The tribunal is being presided over by the Lion. Sir Francis Frazer, and associated with him are Mr. L. 11. Hesiop and Mr. S. Al. Millington. The concerns the Government proposes taking over are:—H. J. Williams and Co., Ltd., Feilding; the Cunningham Carrying Co., Ltd., Lower Hutt; H. B. W. Osborne, Foxton; the Hurley Transport Co., Ltd., Palmerston North; Mason Transport, Ltd., Palmerston North; the Wellington Express Co., Ltd., Wellington; J. M. Thomson, Foxton; the Highways Transport Co., Ltd. The State purchasing officers are represented by Dr. N. A. Foden, Crown solicitor.

The first Cases, in which evidence is being taken, are those of the Highways Transport Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, Mason Transport, Ltd., both of Palmerston North. They are represented by Mr. 11. F. O’Leary, K. 0., with him Mr. M. O. Barnett. Mr. O’Leary is also counsel for the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance.
