ONE-ACT PLAYS
Anglican Girls' Clubs' Society On a recent evening the second annual one-act play competition by the clubs of the Anglican Girls’ Clubs’ Society took placq in All Saints’ schoolroom, Kilbirnie, when five one-act plays were staged before a large and interested audience. The clubs taking part in the competition were St. Mary’s, Karori (“Seeing the World”), St. Aidan’s, Miramar (“Mechanical Jane”), Wellington City (“A Family Affair”), All Saints’, Kilbirnie (“Joint Owners in Spain”), and St. Mark’s (“The Annual Jumble Sale"). In announcing the result of the competition, Miss Ailsa Newton, in her capacity of joint judge with Miss Shaw, stated that the standard of the work as a whole was very pleasing and a great improvement upon the work of last year. Their allocation of first place to the Wellington City club was actuated, of course, by the splendid rendering of the play. Furthermore, a noticeable feature of that club’s work was the faithful portrayal of the individual parts. The performance of All Saints’ club was also very good and merited second place; St. Aidan’s came third, St. Mary’s fourth, and St. Mark’s fifth.
On behalf of all present, Miss Watson congratulated the clubs on their work, and also thanked Misses Newton and Shaw for acting as judges. She considered that the judges had imparted to the players much useful dramatic knowledge, and the experience gained, together with their helpful criticism, would prove most heipfuL The appreciation of those present was also accorded the work of Mrs. Davies, whose untiring efforts “behind the scenes” contributed much to the success of the evening. Townswomen's Guild The monthly meeting of the Wel : lington Central branch of the Townswomen’s Guild was very well attended, and the membership was increased by 15. The retiring secretary, Mrs. Herron, was accorded a vote of thanks for past services. Mrs. P. H. Kinsman, who was elected secretary for the coming year, was given an ovation on assuming the secretarial chair. The president, Mrs. James Pow, read the report. of the first annual conference, which proved very interesting. An entertaining and instructive novelty competition was held during the afternoon. Miss Ngaire Garlic sang two solos. It was decided to hold the next meeting in February.
