NEW TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER

Solid Breeding Of Jeanne (By Carbine.) The latest North Island two-year-old winner, Jeanne, behaved with the steadiness of an old hand when she won the Empire Nursery Handicap at Hastings on Saturday. Notwithstanding her newness to racing, her friends had no fear of the result and backed her confidently. In her all-the-way win her steadiness helped her as much as her speed. She stood at the barrier like a horse with years of experience, and was on the way before the others realised that the race was in progress. Through her breeding one would expect Jeanne to be a very useful performer. She comes of a solid New Zealand family. Her sire is the Rpi Herode horse Lackham, who has begotten good gallopers, including Golden Wings and Mala Her dam is Jean Laddo, a daughter of Jeanne d’Arc, who produced Orleans, Demos and others. Orleans won good races for Mr. S. W. Tatham, and Demos was a smart sprinter. The line goes back to the famous mares Waimea and Flora Mclvor. Mr. C. Jones, Palmerston North, br;d Jeanne and sold her to Mr. L. W. Jones, from whom she was purchased by Mr. A. W. Akers, part owner of Corroborce. J.' Sullivan trains her at Woodville.
